Worongary to Robina M1 Upgrade - Fabrication of Steelwork for Project

Overview of Project

The M1 upgrade between Worongary and Robina was part of the Pacific Motorway M1 Upgrade Program.

The project involved widening the north and southbound lanes from four to six lanes between Worongary (Exit 77) and Mudgeeraba (Exit 79) interchanges; extend and upgrade the Exit 77 and Exit 79 on and off-ramps; widen existing bridges; and widen the southbound motorway between Mudgeeraba (Exit 79) and Robina interchanges (Exit 82).

 Scope of Works

Neumann Contractors were awarded the supply and manufacture of the galvanised steelwork required for the project.  All steelwork was fabricated to TMR Quality Specification MRTS78.

Fabrication consisted of:

  • Galvanized Cover Plates for concrete median barriers
  • Holding Down Bolts for the bridge deck units
  • Bridge Traffic Rails
  • VMS Cantilevered Structure
  • CHS Support Steelwork for two wildlife walkways
  • Cable trays and Support Frames
  • Stainless Steel Alignment Support Brackets

 Outcome

The project steelwork was fabricated and welded to AS/NZS 1554.1SP and MRTS78- Fabrication of Structural Steelwork to maintain a high-quality product thereby ensuring that the infrastructure design life was achievable or likely to be exceeded with minimal maintenance.  Regular weekly reporting and communication between all stakeholders ensured that steelwork was delivered as planned and in time for erection to maintain the principal construction schedule.
